29 June 2018 | 8.30 PM

Coming from land of the beats Brazil, Simone Sou is a natural born percussionist. Throughout her musical career, she has collaborated and toured the world with Zeca Baleiro, Zelia Duncan, Badi Assad, Jards Macalé, Marku Ribas, Elza Soares, the legendary rock band from Tropicalia movement Os Mutantes – to name but a few. She’s known for her passion to dive into new musical adventures with unexpected outcomes. That’s exactly why On the Roof has given Sou carte blanche. She will be playing two sets with different line-ups tonight.

Set 1: Brazilian Masters
Simone Sou ft. Nelson Latif – guitar and Elizabeth Fadel – keys

Cavaquinho and acoustic guitar player Nelson Latif formed his musical identity in the legendary jazz scene of 1980’s São Paulo. With roots in choro and jazz, Latif merges Brazilian styles and a classical guitar technique with diverse musical influences. In his melodic phrasing one hears bebop and Brazilian syncopations, and in his virtuosity the energy of flamenco.

Brazilian pianist Elizabeth Fadel was schooled as a classical piano player but also embraced popular Brazilian music. She has played both as a solist as with orchestras. Together with these two fellow Brazilians, Simone Sou is in good company.

Set 2: Balkan Brazil Experience
Simone Sou ft. Oleg Fateev (Moldavia) – bayan and Eran Har Even (Israel) – guitar

Between Brazil, Moldavia and Israel this trio creates a musical experience jumping from one musical tradition to another. Their compositions are inspired in traditional Russian/Moldavian/Brazilian and Israeli folk music blended with world, jazz and classical music.

Oleg Fateev plays the bayan – the Russian accordion – sings old gipsy songs and Russian composers. Simone Sou plays Brazilian and world percussion, bringing a variation of sounds into her drum/percussion set up, singing in her percussive way. Add tot hat the mystic guitar of Eran Har Even.
